Sabah, Malaysia
Sabah is a rural state in Malaysia that is located on the island of Borneo. It is a very diverse geography that includes beaches, rainforest, and mountainous highlands. The climate is equatorial, with warm to hot weather prevailing.
The Good Shepherd Sisters run programs for children and families in the rural/remote areas of Sabah. They have a youth residence for school children age 6-12 who would otherwise have to walk up to 3 or 4 hours to and from school every day. Prior to the setup of the residence, school attendance was sporadic and education was lacking. In addition, the Sisters run programs for women and children in the nearby city of Kota Kinabalu.
There are two volunteers placed in Malaysia. They assist with the overall management of the youth residence, by coaching, counseling, and tutoring the children. The volunteers also participate in the activities and projects of a Rural Training Centre which is also run by the Sisters. This Centre provides educational and recreational activities for children and youth in the village. In addition, the volunteers assist in the programs for women and youth in Kota Kinabalu.
