What attracted you to GSV?

As a soon-to-be college graduate, I was seeking an option of service that would allow me to put into action my passion for human rights and social justice. At the same time, I wanted an experience that provided a foundation of support for the work I would be doing. GSV, with its four tenants of spirituality, simplicity, community, and social justice did just that. Moreover, the organization’s crucial emphasis on serving women, adolescents, and children (the populations discriminated against and oppressed the most) resonated strongly within me.

Where are you serving/what kind of work are you doing?

I’m spearheading Aiming High, an after-school program for middle school students and MS447 in the Bronx. It’s the first year that Aiming High will be offered at this new middle school. The program supports school engagement and helps prepare students for succeeding in high school. It also fosters personal identity and self-efficacy through internships, workshops, and service learning projects.

How have you seen personal growth thus far as a result of your experience (site placement/community) with GSV?

I am learning how to really put theory into practice. GSV is giving me the opportunity to live intentionally with two remarkable people that affirm and solidify my strengths every day. GSV is also giving me an opportunity to live in an amazing city and serve in an area where I can address the value of education and its role in empowering young people.

What is the best or most surprising part about your volunteer year so far?

As I mentioned before, the best part has been the foundation of support and inclusivity that GSV provides for me. Within the first two days of Orientation, I shared more with my community members than I ever have with my family or my dearest friends. That really says something about GSV.

Any advice for someone considering post-graduate service?

Make it happen! Making the decision to volunteer your time for a year is an admirable one. Making the decision to volunteer with GSV will undoubtedly strengthen your love for service, while challenging and fostering your values and perceptions. Although I have a long and exciting year ahead of me, I already feel so blessed to have been selected to be part of GSV.
