What attracted you to GSV?

Its small size, personable staff, and sense of community!

Where are you serving/what kind of work are you doing?

I am serving at a high school in Brooklyn.  During the school day I work alongside the social worker and co-facilitate groups as well as do some individual counseling.  During lunch time I’m part of what we like to call “Café Jams” where we play music and games.  We want to make school more fun for the students and create the idea of “play” in school for high schoolers.   I also oversee the entire after school program and am teaching a female sports class!

How have you seen personal growth thus far as a result of your experience (site placement/community) with GSV?

I am challenged every single day at my placement site; by the students and our dynamic staff.  I have already grown in terms of the new experiences I’ve taken on and what I have learned from my supervisors.

What is the best or most surprising part about your volunteer year so far?

One of my favorite parts of this year so far is coming home after a long day at work to my three housemates cooking dinner for us.  It has been the most community building facet of our lives together for me and is something I honestly look forward to on a regular basis.
