PUBLIC POLICY AND ADVOCACY - GOOD SHEPHERD SERVICES
Location: New York, NY
Public Policy and Advocacy

The Good Shepherd Volunteer placed in Public Policy and Advocacy will work with the Government and Community Relations team at Good Shepherd Services (GSS). Also called the Public Policy Fellow, this volunteer spends most of their time at GSS’s Manhattan headquarters where they help advocate for initiatives to support the mission and programs of their organization, a large non-profit serving New York City with approximately 100 programs in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and the Bronx. The office of Government and Community Relations provides a bridge between the public policy realm and GSS programs.
GSV Role

The Public Policy Fellow has the unique opportunity to learn how policies (laws, regulations, and administrative directives) and various funding translate into practice at the program level. They will be involved in local and state advocacy activities to promote funding for programs that provide trauma-informed, strength-based services for youth, families, and communities. The GSV may attend both coalition meetings and site visits to learn more about policy issues affecting Good Shepherd programs. They will work collaboratively with other departments to learn about program models and outcomes, assist with special events and programming, conduct research on current policy and best practices, and aid in researching information to apply for public and private funding.
